Notes of Interest

We received the following information via e-mail from Joe's Great Great Grand daughter, Irene  Holmes Watson of Nacogdoches, Tx.

Joseph died of Pneumonia after crossing the Sabine River holding on to the tail of his horse as it swam across...think they were being chased by "cattle rustlers" from my grandfather's story. Anyway, Joseph had built his home on the Texas side of the River on land that his father-in-law ( Henry BIVENS) gave Emily as their wedding gift. Joseph ran his cows on the Louisiana side of the river and was just returning from a cattle drive to New Orleans. He rode up on the rustlers camp as they were slaughtering one of his cows and he drew his gun.. They chased him to the Sabine. After arriving home soaking wet in the dead of winter: the older son, Charley; watched his parents count out the gold coins from Joseph's saddle bags, and put in baking-powder cans. Joseph buried the baking powder cans in the woods the next day , but he was running a high fever and went to bed and died without telling Emily where. ( died 20 Jan 1889)

I have a tape of my grandfather, Joe HOLMES re-telling the story as it was passed down through the family. It was also printed in the Jasper Newsboy History section several years ago.
